The “decolonization of Southeast Asian Studies” has gained attention recently, encompassing diverse interpretations and approaches. In the US, efforts focus on increasing Southeast Asian faculty and diaspora representation, while in Southeast Asia, emphasis is on reimagining regional borders and territories. Indigenous perspectives add further complexity to decolonization discussions, which can involve both personnel and ideas.
To explore these varied perspectives, RCSD, Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University and the Center for Southeast Asian Studies UW-Madison CSEAS – New are organizing a workshop from July 17-19, 2025. Supported by the Henry Luce Foundation, the event aims to examine different aspects of decolonizing Southeast Asian Studies.
Interested participants are invited to submit proposals by October 1, 2024, including personal details, a 300-word abstract, and funding requirements. Decisions will be announced by November 15, 2024. The organizers plan to produce an edited collection based on the conference proceedings.
